Camera Source customer builds the ultimate trailer camera system

When it comes to safety Camera Source customer Rick W. doesn't compromise. Rick called looking for a complete trailer camera solution that allowed him to see around his camper from virtually every angle so we set him up with a comprehensive kit that fit his needs. We started with a rear camera for his Dodge Ram pickup truck, which allowed him to connect to his camper quickly and easily without having to get out of the truck to line up the hitch every time. Rick opted for our license plate camera model CS-ULPM since he had an older generation truck and there wasn't an OEM style camera kit available, plus the license plate camera is affordable and installs quickly and easily.

The trailer encompasses both a rear camera and two side cameras so that every vantage point could be covered. The rear camera is our standard commercial model CS-UCCD and the side cameras are our commercial grade CS-SCCD-LR, which install super easy and can be mounted anywhere. Mounting the side cameras toward the front of the camper allows for the most inclusive view of the trailer and anything around it (see photos of the side cameras mounted on the camper). Now shifting lanes on the highway can be done safely without worrying if someone is hanging out in the blind spot. The side cameras can be configured to stay on constantly, come on automatically with the turn signals, or they can be manually triggered at any time through a click of a button on the remote control or monitor panel. The rear camera not only allows for constant monitoring on the highway but significantly enhances safety when backing!

Since Rick needed a way to easily disconnect the cameras when removing the trailer so he utilized the 5th wheel disconnect harness (CS-UTQC) for each of the three cameras on his trailer. These harnesses are similar to the existing trailer connector in that the socket lid flips open for the coiled camera harness to form the connection, maximizing weather resistance for the camera system. Since each trailer harness quick disconnect only supports one camera three total harnesses were needed for this system. See how the cables look when they are installed! Another view of the sockets mounted in the bumper.

In the cab Rick opted for the 7" quad screen monitor, which allows him to monitor all 4 cameras simultaneously or select a different configuration for viewing. The monitor can be configured to view one camera, two cameras, three, or four simultaneously and switching between views is as easy as a push of a button on the remote. The monitor also has trigger wires that allow the turn signals or reverse light circuit to trigger a camera automatically at a desired time.

Rick's trailer camera kit consisted of the following items:

  • CS-7QCCD1 7" quad screen monitor with 64' cable and commercial grade camera
  • CS-SUCCD-LR commercial grade side cameras
  • CS-UTQC-3 universal quick disconnect harness
  • CS-UC10 10 meter camera coaxial cable (2)

We have bundled all the above components into one kit to keep things simple - check it out here:
